Heritage Rose Garden

The Garlington Rose Garden offers residents and visitors a tranquil retreat immersed in the timeless beauty of heritage roses. Meticulously curated and lovingly maintained, the garden is home to an extraordinary collection of 141 rose varieties, many of which are considered historically significant.

In South Africa, roses bred before 1945 are recognised as Heritage Roses or Old Garden Roses (OGR). The Garlington Rose Garden celebrates this botanical legacy, with roses ranging from the oldest variety dating back to the 1500s, to the renowned ‘Peace’ rose, named in the wake of World War II. Each variety offers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of rose cultivation, with unique colors, forms, and scents that transform the garden throughout the seasons.

The garden’s charm has drawn admiration from across the globe, including from international rose breeders, such as a visiting delegation from India. It stands not only as a visual and sensory masterpiece, but also as a living archive — a place where history, horticulture, and heartfelt community contributions intertwine.

More than a showcase, the Garlington Rose Garden is a shared space for reflection, relaxation, and connection with nature. Its winding pathways invite slow strolls, while shaded benches offer moments for quiet thought or neighbourly conversation. Whether in full spring bloom or winter dormancy, the garden remains a grounding presence — reflecting the estate’s ethos of balanced living.

Some of our remarkable legacy rose specimens include:

  • ‘Albertine’ (1921), once-flowering and gracing the back fence
  • ‘Gruss an Aachen’ (1909), flourishing around the estate’s gazebo —donated by homeowners as a centrepiece of community spirit
  • ‘General Gallieni’ (1899), with its vivid blooms
  • The vibrant spring performance of the Cherokee rose (Rosa laevigata, 1759), climbing playfully through lemon trees and across old trunks
  • Rarities like ‘Felicia’ (1928), ‘Tausendschon’ (1906), and ‘Goldfinch’ (1907)

One rose is enough for the dawn.
